Tartar or Calculus - What's the Difference?

Posted on 8/15/2025 by NC Pediatric Dentisty
Adorable little girl getting a dental examHave you ever heard your dentist mention "tartar" or "calculus" during a checkup? These terms often get used interchangeably, but they're not exactly the same thing. While both can build up on your teeth and cause problems, understanding the difference is important for maintaining good oral hygiene.

Tartar vs. Calculus: What's the Difference?

Tartar is the common name for dental calculus, a hard, mineralized deposit that forms on the surface of your teeth. It starts as a soft, sticky film called plaque, which is made up of bacteria, food particles, and saliva. If plaque isn't removed through regular brushing and flossing, it can harden into tartar within 24-48 hours.

Here's the main difference:

•  Tartar is the visible, hardened form of plaque. It's the rough, yellow or brown buildup you can sometimes see on your teeth.
•  Calculus is the scientific term for dental calculus. It refers to the same mineralized deposit, but from a medical perspective.

Where Does Tartar Come From?

The main culprit for tartar buildup is poor oral hygiene. When plaque isn't removed regularly, it builds up and hardens. Other factors that can contribute to tartar formation include:

•  Sugary and acidic foods and drinks: These create an environment in your mouth that encourages plaque growth.
•  Dry mouth: Saliva helps to wash away food particles and bacteria, so a lack of saliva can make it easier for plaque to build up.
•  Smoking: Smoking contributes to plaque buildup and makes it harder to remove.
•  Genetics: Some people are simply more prone to developing tartar than others.

Why is Tartar a Problem?

Tartar is more than just an unsightly buildup on your teeth. It can cause a number of serious oral health problems, including:

•  Gum disease: Tartar irritates the gums, leading to inflammation and infection. This can damage the gums and the bone that supports your teeth, potentially leading to tooth loss.
•  Tooth decay: Tartar can trap food and bacteria against your teeth, increasing the risk of cavities.
•  Bad breath: Tartar can harbor bacteria that produce foul-smelling gases, leading to chronic bad breath.

How to Prevent Tartar Buildup

The best way to prevent tartar buildup is to practice good oral hygiene:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to brush for at least two minutes each time, and make sure to reach all areas of your mouth.
•  Floss once a day. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.
•  Use an antiseptic mouthwash. Mouthwash can help to kill bacteria and reduce plaque buildup.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can remove tartar that you can't remove at home, and can also check for other dental problems.

What to Do if You Already Have Tartar

If you already have tartar buildup, you'll need to see your dentist for a professional cleaning. This will remove the tartar and help to prevent further problems. Depending on the severity of the buildup, your dentist may use a variety of tools, including an ultrasonic scaler, hand instruments, and polishing paste.

By understanding the difference between tartar and calculus, you can take steps to prevent buildup and keep your smile healthy and beautiful. Remember, good oral hygiene is the key to preventing tartar and other dental problems. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to talk to your dentist.
