The Easiest Way to Care for your Baby's Teeth

Posted on 3/2/2026 by NC Pediatric Dentisty
Little boy brushing his teethTaking care of your little one is a big job, and it starts earlier than you might think! Many parents are surprised to learn that oral care should begin even before the first tooth pops through. Let's explore the simplest steps you can take to establish healthy habits for your child right from the start, setting them up for a lifetime of bright smiles.

Starting Early: Before the First Tooth

Even though you can’t see them, your baby’s teeth are developing under the gums. This is when establishing good habits becomes important. After each feeding, gently wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth or a gauze pad. This removes milk residue and bacteria that can lead to problems later on. Make this a regular part of your routine, just like bath time or story time. This simple step also helps your baby get used to having their mouth touched, making the transition to brushing easier.

When Teeth Appear: Gentle Brushing

The arrival of the first tooth is an exciting milestone! Now it’s time to introduce a toothbrush. Choose a toothbrush specifically designed for babies, with a small head and soft bristles. Use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste – about the size of a grain of rice – for babies under three years old. Gently brush all surfaces of the tooth, paying attention to the gumline. Do this twice a day, especially after the last feeding before bedtime.

Making it Fun: Positive Reinforcement

Brushing doesn’t have to be a chore! Turn it into a fun activity. Sing a song, make funny faces, or let your child hold the toothbrush (under your supervision, of course). Positive reinforcement is key to creating a positive association with oral care. You can also brush your own teeth at the same time, showing your child that it's a normal and important part of your daily routine.

The Role of Pediatric Dentistry

As experts in pediatric dentistry, we understand the unique needs of infants and children. Regular check-ups are an important part of maintaining your child’s oral health. We can provide guidance on proper brushing techniques, diet, and other preventive measures. We can also detect and address any potential problems early on, when they are easier to treat. The American Dental Association recommends that a child's first dental visit should occur within six months after the first tooth appears, or no later than their first birthday.

Diet Matters: Limiting Sugar

What your baby eats and drinks plays a big role in their oral health. Avoid sugary drinks, like juice and soda, and limit sugary snacks. Offer water or plain milk instead. If your baby uses a bottle at bedtime, fill it with water rather than milk or juice. Prolonged exposure to sugary liquids can lead to tooth decay.

Building a Foundation for a Lifetime

By following these simple steps, you can help your baby develop healthy oral care habits that will last a lifetime. Remember, consistency is key! Making oral care a regular part of your routine from the very beginning will set your child up for a future filled with healthy, happy smiles.
