Your Child and Sippy Cups

Baby with sippy cupAre you wondering about sippy cups and how they fit into your child's dental health journey? As a pediatric dentist, I often get questions about these seemingly simple cups. Let's explore the ins and outs of sippy cups, and how to use them in a way that promotes healthy smiles.

The Purpose of Sippy Cups

Sippy cups are designed as a transition tool. They help children move from a bottle or breast to drinking from a regular cup. They offer a spill-resistant way for little ones to learn to drink independently. This is a great skill to learn, but it's important to understand their potential impact on your child's teeth.

The Sugar Connection

Many parents fill sippy cups with juice, milk, or other sweetened beverages. While these drinks might seem harmless, they contain sugars that can feed harmful bacteria in your child's mouth. These bacteria produce acids that attack tooth enamel, leading to cavities. Constant exposure to sugary liquids, especially over long periods, significantly increases the risk of baby bottle tooth decay, also known as early childhood caries. This decay pattern typically affects the upper front teeth, but can spread to other teeth if left unchecked.

The Flow Matters

The type of sippy cup also plays a role. Some sippy cups have a free-flow design, meaning liquid is constantly available with minimal effort. This constant sipping exposes teeth to sugars for extended periods, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and increasing the risk of cavities. Cups that require more active sucking, like those with valves, can be a slightly better option, but still require careful consideration.

Tips for Healthy Sippy Cup Habits

Here are some simple tips to help you use sippy cups in a way that protects your child’s teeth:

•  Water is Best: The best thing to put in a sippy cup is water. It's sugar-free, calorie-free, and helps keep your child hydrated.
•  Limit Sugary Drinks: If you choose to offer juice or milk, do so sparingly and only during mealtimes. Avoid letting your child sip on these beverages throughout the day.
•  Dilute Juice: If you do offer juice, consider diluting it with water to reduce the sugar content.
•  Supervise Sipping: Encourage your child to finish their drink within a reasonable timeframe (around 20 minutes) instead of carrying the cup around for hours.
•  Clean the Cup Regularly: Thoroughly clean the sippy cup after each use to prevent bacteria from growing.
•  Transition to a Regular Cup: Encourage your child to transition to a regular, open cup as soon as they are developmentally ready, usually around 12-18 months. This helps develop oral motor skills and reduces the reliance on sippy cups.
