Teaching Your Toddler How to Brush Their Teeth Properly

As a child dentist, I often get asked by parents about the best way to teach their toddlers how to brush their teeth. It can feel like a struggle, but with patience and the right approach, you can set your child up for a lifetime of healthy smiles!

Make it Fun!

Let's face it, brushing teeth isn't naturally the most exciting activity for a toddler. The key is to make it fun! Try these ideas:

•  Sing a Song: Choose a favorite song that lasts about two minutes, which is the recommended brushing time. This helps them understand how long to brush.
•  Use a Toothbrush Timer: These cute timers light up or play music for two minutes, making brushing a game.
•  Let Them Choose: Allow your toddler to pick out their own toothbrush with a fun character or color they love.
•  Mirror, Mirror: Brush in front of a mirror together. This lets them see what they're doing and makes it more engaging.

Be a Role Model

Children learn by watching their parents. Make brushing your own teeth a visible and consistent part of your routine. Let your toddler see you brushing and flossing, and explain what you're doing. Invite them to brush alongside you. This not only teaches them good habits but also shows them that brushing is important for everyone in the family.

The Right Technique

Even with the fun elements, it's crucial to teach the proper brushing technique:

•  Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste: For children under three, consult with your child dentist about whether to use fluoride toothpaste.
•  Brush gently in small circles: Focus on all surfaces of the teeth – the front, back, and top.
•  Get the Tongue: Gently brush the tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath.
•  Spit, Don't Rinse: Encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste after brushing, but avoid rinsing with water. This allows the fluoride to stay on the teeth longer and protect them.

Make it a Routine

Consistency is key when it comes to establishing any good habit. Aim to brush your toddler's teeth twice a day – once in the morning and once before bedtime. Make it a part of their daily routine, just like getting dressed or reading a story.

When to Start

You can start cleaning your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth even before their first tooth erupts. Once the first tooth appears, switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for babies. Remember to schedule regular checkups with your child dentist. Early dental visits help to detect and prevent potential problems and ensure your child's oral health is on the right track.

Handling Resistance

It's normal for toddlers to resist brushing at times. If your child is being uncooperative, try these tips:

•  Be Patient: Don't get frustrated. Stay calm and encouraging.
•  Offer Choices: Give them some control by letting them choose which toothbrush to use or which song to sing.
•  Take Breaks: If they're really struggling, take a break and try again later.
•  Positive Reinforcement: Praise them for their efforts and reward them with non-food treats, like stickers or extra playtime.

Remember

Teaching your toddler how to brush their teeth properly takes time and patience. By making it fun, being a good role model, and establishing a routine, you can help your child develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime. And don't forget to visit your child dentist regularly for checkups and professional cleanings!
