How To Soothe Teething Pain

Girl wth tooth painDealing with a teething baby can be tough! Seeing your little one uncomfortable is never easy. But don't worry, there are many safe and effective ways to help ease their discomfort during this natural process. Let's explore some helpful strategies to soothe your child.

Understanding Teething

Teething is the process where your baby's teeth break through their gums. This usually starts around 6 months, but it can vary quite a bit. Some babies might start earlier, while others might be a bit later. Signs of teething can include increased drooling, fussiness, chewing on objects, and sometimes a mild fever. Your little one might also rub their gums a lot or have trouble sleeping. Recognizing these signs is the first step in helping your baby feel better.

Safe and Effective Relief Methods

One of the simplest and most effective ways to soothe sore gums is with gentle pressure. You can use a clean finger to massage your baby's gums. The pressure can help relieve the discomfort.

Another great option is a chilled teething ring. The cold can numb the gums and provide relief. Make sure the teething ring is solid and doesn't contain any liquid that could leak. Avoid freezing the teething ring, as it can become too hard and hurt your baby's gums.

A clean, damp washcloth can also work wonders. Let your baby chew on it – the texture and coolness can be very soothing.

What to Avoid

It’s important to know what not to use when your baby is teething. Teething gels and medications containing benzocaine should be avoided. The FDA has warned against using these products for teething because they can be harmful to babies. Also, avoid giving your baby hard foods like raw carrots or frozen bagels to chew on, as these can be a choking hazard. Teething necklaces and bracelets are also not recommended due to the risk of choking and strangulation.

Keeping Your Baby Comfortable

Besides directly addressing the gum pain, there are other things you can do to keep your baby comfortable during teething. Extra cuddles and attention can go a long way. Sometimes, all your baby needs is to be held and comforted.

Wipe away excess drool frequently to prevent skin irritation. You can use a soft cloth to gently pat the area around their mouth and chin.

If your baby is eating solid foods, you might want to offer them cooler options like applesauce or yogurt. These can be soothing on their gums.

When to Seek Professional Advice

While teething is a normal process, it's always a good idea to consult with your pediatrician or a pediatric dentist if you have any concerns. If your baby has a high fever, diarrhea, or is excessively irritable, it's important to rule out other possible causes. They can also provide guidance on managing teething symptoms and address any specific questions you might have. They can also tell you what to expect when your baby starts to get their teeth.

Final Thoughts

Teething can be a challenging time for both you and your baby, but with the right strategies, you can help ease their discomfort and make the process a little smoother. Remember to be patient, try different methods, and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. Your little one will be smiling with those new teeth before you know it!
