First Dental Visit

Posted on 10/15/2026 by NC Pediatric Dentistry
A smiling, excited young girl sits in the dental chair, eagerly awaiting her dental exam while her dentist places a bib on her.Hey everyone! Getting ready for your child's first trip to the dentist? It's a big milestone! Making sure that first experience is positive can set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Let’s walk through what you can expect and how to prepare.

When Should We Go?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child see a dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth – whichever comes first! Seems early, right? This visit isn't just about checking for cavities. It's about establishing a "dental home," where your child can get comfortable with dental care and we can start preventive care early.

Preparing Your Child

How you talk about the dentist can make a big difference. Keep the language positive and upbeat! Avoid using scary words like "needle," "drill," or "hurt." Instead, talk about how the dentist helps keep our teeth strong and healthy.

You can also read books about going to the dentist, or play pretend dentist at home. Let your child practice opening their mouth wide and counting their teeth.

What Happens During the First Visit?

The first visit is usually pretty short and simple. It's mainly about getting your child comfortable. Here's what you can expect:

•  Chatting with the Dentist: We'll talk about your child's medical history, feeding habits, and any concerns you have about their teeth.
•  Gentle Examination: We'll gently examine your child's teeth and gums. This might involve a quick peek or sitting knee-to-knee with your child on your lap.
•  Cleaning (Maybe): Depending on your child's age and cooperation, we might do a gentle cleaning.
•  Fluoride Application: We might apply a fluoride varnish to help protect against cavities.
•  Tips and Tricks: We'll give you personalized advice on brushing, flossing, and diet to keep your child's teeth healthy.

What If My Child Is Scared?

It’s completely normal for kids to be a little anxious about new experiences! Our goal is to make the visit fun and stress-free. We use kid-friendly language, show them the tools we use, and let them touch and feel them. We use a "tell-show-do" approach, explaining what we're going to do before we do it.

We are trained to work with children and use a variety of techniques to help them feel comfortable. If your child is particularly anxious, let us know beforehand so we can plan accordingly. Sometimes, bringing a favorite toy or blanket can help.

Why Is the First Visit So Important?

This early visit is more than just a checkup. It's an opportunity to:

•  Prevent Problems: We can identify potential problems early, like early signs of tooth decay or issues with tooth development.
•  Educate Parents: We can provide you with the information and tools you need to keep your child's teeth healthy.
•  Build Trust: We want to create a positive relationship with your child so they feel comfortable visiting the dentist in the future.

By preparing yourself and your child, you can help ensure that their first dental visit is a success! Remember, we're here to help you and your child every step of the way. A healthy smile starts early!
