Here are some of the most commonly asked questions, and their answers. Frequently Asked Dental Questions Concerning KidsIf you have a question about your child's oral health, there is a good chance that someone else has had the same question. Here are some of the most common questions that we hear. At what age will my baby start to get teeth? The average age for the first tooth is six months old. However, just because it is the average that does not mean it will be exactly then. The first tooth arriving at any point in the first year is considered normal. When should my baby have their first dental appointment? We recommend that you bring your baby in to see us before his first birthday. We will examine him, but we will also use that visit as an information session because we know that you will have plenty of questions. When do I start brushing my child's teeth? When your child is a newborn, you should gently wipe off their gums after they nurse. When they receive their first tooth, you should brush it for them. When they are old enough to want to brush her teeth theirselves, let them, but you might want to brush them again yourself after they have finished so that nothing will be missed. When they are ready, let them brush on their own. Each child will be different. When Should A Child Start To Use ToothpasteA child under the age of three should use the amount that is the size of a grain of rice. Children ages three through six should use an amount the size of a pea. One word about toothpaste; if your child swallows the toothpaste you will want to stay away from toothpaste with fluoride. You will also want to teach your child to spit instead of swallow. How do I prepare my child for a trip to the dentist? It would help if you made sure that a trip to our office is going to be a positive one. Children learn from example, so you need to make sure that your child knows that you are not afraid of going to the dentist. Avoid scary words such as "hurt." Play dentist with them with a favorite stuffed animal. It will help your them to feel better about the visit.
